Interview With Sesh Adivi (Telugu Movie KARMA Director)

Adivi Sesh is just 25 and he has wrapped up directing and acting in a Telugu film Karma completely shot in the United Status. Tall, fair and good-looking Sesh tried his hand at acting in a Telugu film to be directed by Krishna Vamsi titled Mallepuvvu but that didn't work out. Disappointed he left for the US and joined a film school. Straight out of it he pooled his family money and personal savings to make Karma that has an entire cast and crew as Americans.

His cousin Sai Kiran Adivi who made Vinayakudu and Village Lo Vinayakudu is giving him moral support but other than that the actor is on his own, calling the media and promoting his first ever bilingual film. Sesh says that he strongly believes in destiny and adds that if he had done Mallepuvvu, Karma wouldn't have happened. Many people spend their lives with their passion unfulfilled but he thinks he is extremely lucky to follow and realize his dream. Sesh's grand dad is Adivi Bapiraju, a great literary figure who had written Himabindu and Gona Ganna Reddy, his songs and poetry has been used for movies and now both the boys Sesh and Sai Kiran are into writing for movies and directing them.

Sesh considers Karma as an addition to his resume and roped in Hollywood actress Jade Tailor to play Padma, his love interest. She was apparently chosen from 300 artists who came for the audition and miraculously mastered the Telugu dialogues within three months. But how did Karma germinate? Sesh met with a massive car accident in Sunnyvale and escaped from the jaws of death. After he regained consciousness and walked out of the hospital to the junk yard he was stunned to see his car completely crushed. The people who lived there for thirty years claimed never to have seen anyone come out alive from such a mishap.

It was then he started believing in the supernatural power and the theory of Karma, that he's here today for all the good deeds he must have done in his past birth. So armed with a degree in a film school, having been exposed to fundamentals of filmmaking and world cinema, he immediately embarked on this ambitious project. He says, "I want to deliver popular entertainment to the masses, not cheap comedy. Whether the subject is good or bad..people should be telling it but I feel I've been successful in showing what our culture teaches us in the form of a super natural thriller with a comment on Kaliyuga and mankind."

What about the story? It is about a medical student Padma who as a child saw her father being murdered by a priest and for reasons which can be tracked to this incident has turned atheist, lives alone and is forlorn, distraught. Her friend Raj attempts to bring her out of the situation but of no avail. She gets to meet Dev who is high on spirituality and her conversations with him, the interactions land her in a dilemma. There is a conflict of ideas between God and science and as Padma starts questioning and understanding Dev, she finds herself being drawn in love with him. But is Padma convinced with Dev's philosophy or will she ever believe in him is the final part of the story.

Boyapati Sreenu Interview spoke about SIMHA

Ater watching ‘Simha’ everyone will feel proud of Balayya

Two box-office hits like ‘Bhadra’ and ‘Tulasi’ have made Boyapati Sreenu so confident that he is going to be a sure shot winner with his latest release ‘Simha’. This is of course a challenge to Balakrishna as well since it is an important film for him too. Remember Balakrishna’s powerful roles in ‘Samarasimha Reddy’, ‘Narasimha Naidu’ and ‘Lakshmi Narasimha’. Now, he is going to appear as ‘Simha’, but the director claims that he is showing him quite differently from the roles he played in the above mentioned films. On the eve of release of ‘Simha’ on Friday, the 30th April, 2010, Boyapati Sreenu spoke about his film. A few excerpts:

How do you feel directing Balakrishna?

I’ve seen Balayya’s working style since the making of ‘Krishna Babu’ and ‘Pavitra Prema’ as I worked as an assistant director for both films. He believes in director and never involves himself into anything once he okays the film.

Your earlier films ‘Bhadra’ and ‘Tulasi’, boasts some strong action elements. How about ‘Simha’?

‘Bhadra’ is a romantic film blend with action elements. I adopted a mixed style in ‘Tulasi’ also, i.e., family drama and action scenes. But ‘Simha’ is a story of a courageous man. One can find the film as powerful as the title signifies. The film is blend with all kinds of emotions.

What’s new in this? We have already seen Balakrishna in such films before?

Yes! It’s true. That is the reason why I chose to show him in a new dimension. I designed his characterization in two shades that leads many to believe that they are seeing a new personality. His performance is ultimate in the film.

So you mean to say that we can altogether expect a new Balakrishna in ‘Simha’.

Mind you I am not saying that I did lot of experiments and show the public as something unique. As the film is releasing tomorrow, I needn’t have to discuss much about that now. Audience’s opinions will enable you to understand what I mean to say.

You said that you directed ‘Simha’ from the audience point of view. What was your feeling as a viewer after watching the film?

Great! It’s not just me, after watching ‘Simha’ everyone will feel proud of Balayya. The audience will get complete satisfaction and come out of theaters happily. I’m sure that Balayya’s character would jazz up the fans in theaters.

You seem to have carried the extra burden of writing dialogues too.

How can dialogue writing be a burden for a director like me who wrote the script with utmost interest? Dialogue is an essential part of developing my characters. When I think of a scene, dialogues just flow naturally. With careful planning and better time management we can carve out a little more time for writing even if we have a packed schedule.

Was it based on commercial aspects that you choose the heroines?

Do you mean to say that commercial elements alone make the film a successful one? If that is so, then all films featuring three to four heroines should become super hits, isn’t it! Frankly speaking, you would occasionally find that extraordinary film that blends with best commercial elements becomes a hit.As far as ‘Simha’ is concerned, every character is a prominent one. I had no idea of including any character just for the sake of having one in the film.

You chose Nayantara to cast in a traditional manner. How did you come up with it? Are you also trying to show her differently from stereotypical manner?

No, nothing like that! I am showing her as per the look of the character in the film. Nayantara has a very important and true story to tell. So she has to appear in traditional attire to give life to the character. But one need not feel disappointed about the glamour part as Namitha and Sneha Ullal are going to quench the thirst.

A director like you who has many ideas is taking long breaks. Any reasons?

My aim is not to direct as many films as I can, but to direct quality films. That is the reason why I take such long breaks.

Shilpa Shetty tells that as long as people enjoy the game, stars don’t mind being pitted against each other.

Four wins in a row... What’s the feeling like?
IPL is an unpredictable game. The format is such that one doesn’t know what to expect next. Many thought that the first win was a fluke. Now, it makes me proud to receive the congratulatory messages.

Was it frustrating having to deal with the losses?
We are proud owners and not easily flummoxed by losses. But what became a cause of concern more than the losses was when the injuries of the players started setting in. Thankfully, Shane (Warne) juggled a few players and things started falling into place. Shane has a vision and we just followed his sensibilities. Our players might not be big names, but they are talented.

So, what do you think is working for your team — a strategy or your marriage to Raj Kundra?
My marriage has nothing to do with it. It’s the prayers and hard work of the players that’s yielding such results. I certainly can’t take credit for the hard work of the players. In fact, after the initial losses, many had lost faith in Team Jaipur. But with the team’s current performance, examples are being cited as to how a comeback can be made.

Andrew Symonds has started a fresh controversy with Yusuf Pathan accusing him of indulging in sledging. Why do you think Indians are made such soft targets?
Sledging has always been a part of cricket. I don’t think this incident was racist or out of the ordinary. But one certainly has to know where to draw the line. In fact, after seeing Yusuf’s fitting reply through his performance, I have told him that I am going to ask people to sledge you all the more (laughs).

While more on Yusuf, you had tweeted how Yusuf’s family had treated you guys to mutton biryani... We are one big family and come together whenever we have time. Talking about this incident, we had won the match and had another game the next day. Yusuf asked for biryani from his family and to our surprise, it was one big handi that was sent to us. I joked with Yusuf, ‘now I know the secret of your sixes’.

So, how did you guys celebrate the successive wins?
The team is kept under strict control with a disciplinarian like Shane. We hope the team continues to keep up this consistence in performance. What’s more, even Shane Watson will soon be joining us.

Are you expecting to make it to the finals?
Under the present circumstances, we are expecting to reach the semis.

How do you boost the team’s morale?
I tell them: ‘make yourself so valuable that people clamour to buy you during the next season ’.

With so many Bollywood celebs involved in IPL, does winning or losing become a prestige issue?
This has never been the case with me. Such things are great for the media to talk about. Whenever Team Jaipur is playing against any team, I want my team to win. Honestly speaking, as long as people enjoy the game, we don’t mind being pitted against each other (laughs).

Army honours Mohanlal with Lieutenant Colonel post

Malayam film star Mohanlal is the Indian Army's latest brand ambassador. He will be given the rank of Lt Col in the Territorial Army in New Delhi on Thursday. He exclusively spoke to CNN-IBN about turning Lieutenant Colonel Mohanlal.

CNN-IBN: You always wanted to be a part of the Army since your childhood?

Mohanlal: Not exactly. Surprisingly in my neighbourhood, my friend Veenu used to sketch lot of pictures inspired from the Army, Air Force and Navy. When I was a child, I used to go, sit and look at those.

CNN-IBN: What do you think a Mohanlal, a celebrity can bring into the Indian Army?

Mohanlal: The thing is that they asked me to be the brand ambassador of the Army. It in itself is a great honour. Being an actor I have visited Delhi many a times, I had been in the Capital for my Padmashree, receiving my Best Actor, Best Producer awards. But this is a very rare thing, or rare an occasion.

CNN-IBN: At 17 when you started off with films, did you ever expect that it's going to come this far?

Mohanlal: I never plan or expect things. This is definitely a gift from the almighty and this is a great honour. Indian Army is honouring me with the Lieutenant Colonel Post.

Tollywood Celebrity 'Parvathy Omanakuttan' Interview

Parvathy Omanakuttan, who won the first Runner Up title at the 2008 Miss World pageant in Johannesburg, is the aspiring beauty queen from Kerala. She was felicitated by Fashion and Film Talent Association (FFTA) yesterday at a function held in Hotel Novotel while she visited Hyderabad. The function was organized by First Copy Productions. After the event Parvathy had a small chit-chat with the press and media at Hitex. Some excerpts –

While in Johannesburg on a week’s tour with other Miss World contestants, I had a great experience. Although I was a little disappointed when they announced my name as runner-up, it took me few seconds to realize that my dream has come true. Yes! I’m still a winner for the people and it is an amazing journey for me all the way from Kerala to Johannesburg.

Speaking about her interest in films the twenty year old Parvathy said “I’m open to Bollywood as well as Southern Film Industries. Infact, waiting for good opportunities which can fetch me more of performance oriented roles. I was brought up in Mumbai and basically I’m a movie buff, hence I watch lot of Hindi films and Malayalam, being my mother tongue I watch Malayalam films as well. Though I have little knowledge about Telugu and Tamil films, I watch them too. Well, to mention about my favourite actors, I like Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek and Hrithik Roshan in Hindi, Mammooty and Prithviraj in Malayalam, Nagarjuna and Mahesh Babu in Telugu and Rajinikanth in Tamil.


Talking about the people in South she said that in early days most of the families used to be very traditional and follow their customs. Girls from such families were never exposed much to the world. Hence they had a wrong notion about the film and fashion industry. But off late the trend has changed. We find our Southern girls at par with girls from North giving tough competition.

Advising the upcoming models, “Smile is the best medicine to keep ourselves healthy. It is advisable for anyone not to experiment with their body especially their skin and hair. The love, affection, humility, respect and caring nature are the symbols of perfect beauty. Along with these qualities, how we carry ourselves with the body language is most important. Beauty is a mixture of inner moral qualities and outer appearance” said the sexy queen Parvathy.

Lastly speaking about her personal interest, “My passion is music and dance. I love Hyderabad and am fond of Charminar and Chudi Bazaar. Not to speak of the delicious Hyderabadi food”.

King - Seenu Vytla Interview

King - Seenu Vytla’s latest film with Nagarjuna – is releasing on 25 December. Seenu Vytla spoke to scribes on this occasion in Annapurna studios on 24 December. Here are the excerpts of chitchat -
Tell us about Nagarjuna’s character in King?
Nagarjuna is donning three roles of Bottu Seenu, Sarath and King in this film. Bottu Seenu is a mass character. Sarath is a software engineer. King belongs to the royal lineage. We shot a part of the film in Bangalore palace. Bottu Seenu, Sarath and King reflect the mass, class and royal aspects. You have to watch the film know if these three people are same or different.

Tell us about working with Nagarjuna?
It was a very good experience working with Nagarjuna. He gave a lot of freedom to me. King my 10th film as the director and I never got such a free hand in my earlier films.

You had the lyrics of title song as records anni brea’king’. Are you aiming for the records?
I am not a kind of guy who is after the records. I was little hesitant to have that lyric in the beginning. This song was the last one we shot recently. After watching the rushes, Devi Sri Prasad insisted that we should go with the lyric. I hope that the film will become a big hit.

Tell us about the 8-heroines song?
This song comes as the last song in the second half. This song comes during the high point of the film. The idea was borrowed from Om Shanti Om film.

Tell us about Brahmanandam character?
After doing the roles of Chari (Dhee) and McDowell Murthy (Ready) Brahmanandam is doing another hilarious character as ‘Jayasurya’. His profession is music direction. But, this film has no backdrop of film industry. Brahmanandam character is linked to the story and it will be there throughout the film.

Srihari is doing the role of a don called Gnaneswar. It will be one of the highlights of the movie.

Tell us about Devi Sri Prasad?
He gave wonderful music. He elevated the second half with terrific background score. There are nine songs in the album and there would be 8 songs in the film. The ‘film titles parody song’ will not be there in the film. King remix song will come during the rolling of end titles.

Tell us about the producer Shiva Prasad Reddy?
I had problems with the producers most of the times. But Shiva Prasad Reddy is one producer who let me free by not interfering. He saw the final copy yesterday night and he was extremely happy with the way film was shaped up.

Tell us about Naga Chaitanya’s project?
Nagarjuna was impressed with my working style after the first schedule and he offered me a film with Naga Chaitanya. This film will be produced by D Siva Prasad Reddy.

What about Venkatesh’s film?
Venkatesh’s film will be launched in the month of March. We are working on the script now.

What is the runtime of the film?
King is the lengthiest film I ever worked on. The runtime of the film is 2 hour and 50 minutes. We started the project on 20 June and the movie is releasing on 25 December. We completed the entire execution in a period of six months.

What is your gut feeling about King?
I am 100% satisfied with the outcome. King will be liked by all.

Ram Gopal Varma's Sunday visit to the Taj along with actor Reitesh Deshmukh, has raised a public outcry. "Is it a picnic?" some questioned, while others raised doubts why 'a film director who specialises in films dealing with the underworld' was present there. Hyd Times speaks to RGV, for whom controversies are a way of life

In view of your visit to the Taj, do you think you have overstepped?
Being at the Taj was incidental, I did not do it consciously. I was there with Riteish (Deshmukh) at that time. I think the whole thing is being blown out of proportion. I have anyway not seen anything more than what was already shown in the media.

What’s your overriding fascination with terrorism?
Once again I make it clear, I have no intentions of making a film out of this incident.

Are you going ahead with your film, Rakta Charitra on the Rayalseema faction feud? Has Moddu Seenu’s death added a new twist to your story's plot?
I am going ahead with the film. Like any other person, I was shocked by Seenu's death. The cycle of violence is continuing and the basic principle that those who live by the sword die by the sword, will not change.

Is Sarkar III still on the cards?
Not really.

Will your film on the media, in some way reflect the media coverage of the Mumbai terror incident?
The film's titled Rann – A News Story and the shooting will start in January. The star cast includes Amitabh Bachchan, Riteish, Sudeep, Paresh Rawal, Rajat Kapoor, Raima Sen, Manisha Koirala, Gul Panang and Mohnish Behl. The script of the film was finalised two months ago, so my using instances of media reporting on the recent incident is out of the question.

Telugu Actress Shraddha Arya gone missing?

‘We haven’t even fixed Shraddha Arya the heroine’

Rumours suggest your film has been stalled because the heroine left the sets.

It hasn’t stopped. Ganesh had told us a long time ago that he had to attend a function this week. So we gave him a four-day break. We will resume shooting from next week. As for the heroine dumping the film, we hadn’t even zeroed in on one.

How come you started the shoot without the heroine?

That’s not a problem because her scenes start only from December 5. Meanwhile, we’re shooting most of Ganesh’s portions, including his fight sequences.

What about Shraddha Arya? She’s reported to have shot some portions for your film.

We did consider her, but none of the films she’s signed have ever taken off, so we were apprehensive about casting her. So now, I’m planning to go to Mumbai to hunt for a new face.

‘The heroine had a personal issue’

How is your new film coming along?

It’s going great. I just shot for some fight sequences in Mysore and returned to the city on Tuesday.

We heard your film has been stalled.

Really? The shooting has been going on smoothly and we’ve taken a short break of 5-6 days because we’ve just canned some fight scenes.

Apparently, the heroine of your film has quit mid-way.

She was never here to shoot in the first place. She had some personal issues to sort out; I heard she wants to get married. We don’t have a heroine, but that will not stop us from continuing with our shooting schedule.

So any names being considered?

There are three names, but I can’t disclose that information.

Avakkai Biriyani Director 'Anish Kuruvilla' Interview

Avakkai Biriyani: A slice of life

Last year Anish Kuruvilla had directed the Telugu film Naa Video Diary (Confessions of a Filmmaker in English) shot on digicam and released it on the Internet. It was quite a daring attempt as exposes the 'negative' side of the film industry.

Subsequently Anish scripted and directed Avakkai Biryani which is slated for release on November 14. Anish has been associated with Sekhar Kammula from his Dollar Dreams days till now (Anand, Godavari, Happy Days). Kammula has produced Avakkai Biryani along with his brother Chandrasekhar Kammula.

Anish delineates about his new film Avakkai Biryani over a cup of coffee:

The title Avakkai Biryani sounds intriguing. Has it something to do with a fusion of cultures?

I like it to be a surprise and want people to discover whether it is one, after coming to the theatres.

What is the film about?

It's the coming-of-age story of two individuals. The film focuses on their dreams, ambitions and relationships. Humour is inbuilt. It's a unique film -- not an urban film as it is set in a small town. The film sends a message to young people to speak out.


'I wanted to have control over the actors'
What are the strong points of Avakkai Biryani?

The film has a good story -- a nice fairy tale. One can watch the story unfold with good characters. It's the old fashioned classic story telling and the characters are those one can identify with. In that sense, it's a slice of life. The film has touching and sensitive events leading to a climax. It is a mix of the Iranian film (in terms of vast landscapes) and classic Telugu film, and will cater to all.

Sekhar Kammula is producing the film. You have been associated with Sekhar for almost close to a decade. How was he as a producer?

Sekhar is a dream producer. He is all that I wanted. He was a pillar of strength. There was no pressure from him as a producer.

Kamal Kamaraju has been cast by you as the main lead. You found a newcomer -- a Telugu girl Bindu Madhavi to star opposite Kamal. Why did you not want to cast established stars?

I made it clear that I did not want stars right from day one. Sekhar said I could try for stars but I wanted to have control over the actors. I have known Kamal from Godavari days (he played the second lead in Godavari). He played the main protagonist in Confessions... Moreover, Kamal has been associated with Avakkai Biryani since the inception stage.

I was clear I wanted a Telugu-speaking girl for the heroine and I chose Bindu Mandhavi, who used to model in Chennai. She is now settled in Hyderabad. She too was looking for an opportunity and I found her suitable. There are quite a few newcomers in the supporting cast too.


'Avakkai Biriyani was shot in and around villages'
You said the film is set in a small town. Where have you shot the film?

In and around villages in Vikarabad (near Hyderabad).

Who is the cinematographer of Avakkai Biriyani?

Shamdat from Kerala. The location around Vikarabad was a dream one for him. He's done a terrific job.

How did you come to know of him?

He had shot a Bahrain film which I saw. I liked the tones and his sensibilities. He has given an Iranian feel to that movie.

You are introducing a new music director in this movie. How did you discover him?

Yes, he is Manikanth Kadri, son of the saxophone maestro Kadri Gopalnath. I had heard a track (he had remixed the famous Vara Veena) composed by him on my friend's laptop. Manikanth had done music only for Kannada films. I wanted him to work for Avakkai Biryani.

How do you find the music?

It's awesome. He's done melody-based tracks.

Who has edited the film?

Editor Praveen Boyna has been my closest sounding board and involved with the story since the beginning. He was also the co-producer of Confessions of a Filmmaker.

Of course, the styles of cutting both the films are different. He has had his own challenges.


'Avakkai Biryani will encourage people to come out with original stories'
Are you nervous with the date of release just a day away?

I am nervous. But I would say Avakkai Biryani is truly a film not seen before. It is an original piece of work and I am proud of it.

Do you think Avakkai Biryani is going to make a mark or create an impact?

I think a lot of people will take encouragement from the fact that we can tell stories. Most of the time, it's a medley of things. There is no proper structure. I think Avakkai Biryani will encourage people to come out with original stories.

I am confident every one will get a name for themselves. The film is fresh and original. I get confidence from the fact that Sekhar has seen it and he is behind the project.
